The mother
Pahja Shinaru (neé Jomalah)

Name: Pahja Shinaru (neé Jomalah)
Age: 42 (ARR), 47 (DT)
Pronouns: She/her
Status: Alive
Occupation: Civil leaderBorn in the Black Shroud in 1535, Pahja is a compassionate, strong-willed woman who does not abide by Keeper of the Moon culture. She rejects the isolationist mindset of other Keeper tribes, and the xenophobic nature of the Gridanians, believing instead that cooperation grants the greatest chances of not only survival, but thriving.Adept at archery from a young age, Pahja is highly regarded as a master of the arts, and even members of the God's Quiver speak her name in reverence.
The Father
X'mhati Tia
Name: X'mhati Tia (Shi-mah-ti)
Age: 22 (At death)
Pronouns: He/him
Status: Deceased
Occupation: Crimson Duelist/Freedom fighterX'mhati grew up prior to Theodoric's tyrannical reign alongside his clan brother X'rhun Tia. Following Theodoric's ascension to the throne in 1546, the two young men took notice of the change his rule had on society. In 1551 X'rhun and X'mhati began to rebel and associate with revolutionaries, eventually forming the Crimson Duelists alongside Lambard Calowise.Surprisingly adept at magic given his humble upbringing, X'mhati was an exceptional Red Mage, with a knack for throwing himself into danger if it meant saving a life.
Prologue
A tale of two lovers
In 1552, the Crimson Duelists were escorting a caravan of refugees out of Gyr Abania when they had a chance encounter with Pahja and her associates. Sympathetic to their plight, the women helped the caravan garner safe passage and led them to Gridania for asylum. Eager to make new allies, the Crimson Duelists sought to befriend the women who helped them.Over the next few days, the two groups mingled and bonded over meals and shared interests. In particular, Pahja and X'mhati formed an especially close bond, often competing and show off their martial prowess to one another. After learning of the Duelists' experiences, the women too felt motivated to put their plan to leave home and start new lives into motion. Pahja's mother, furious with her decision and convinced she would bring ruin, forbade her from ever returning.
Over the next several months the women laid the ground work for their future home nestled between the Southern and Eastern regions of the Shroud. Several of the Ala Mhigans that crossed the border would come to assist in building a new home with them after finding it hard to live in Gridania. Together the two groups harvested beast pelts, chopped lumber, and worked together to construct tools, homes and daily necessities. The settlement served as a place to rest for the Crimson Duelists, travelers, and refugees, however many refugees chose to remain in the village instead of traveling on, finding it hard to live in other Twelveswood settlements.Over the course of time, X'mhati and Pahja grew closer, sharing tales, showing off to one another in hopes of impressing them, talking about their lives. The two quickly became lovers, and before long Pahja was pregnant with their child. Cautious of Theodoric's violent ambitions towards revolutionaries, the two kept their relationship a secret as much as they were able to, to keep the life of their unborn child safe. The only people who knew were the other matriarchs of the growing village. Being sworn sisters of Pahja they would sooner die than betray one another.Their baby was born in the Summer of 1553, which X'mhati made a point to be present for. The baby was born entirely with Keeper features, from her pale skin to her round eyes. X'mhati had hoped to name his child X'naru, but seeing as they wanted to hide their child from dangerous forces, they agreed a name originating from the X tribe may attract danger. However, having divorced from her birth family, Pahja decided to take X'naru as her surname while changing the spelling to its phonetic counterpart 'Shinaru.' This moved X'mhati to tears, as the name would remain a part of his family, even if in secret. Pahja instead decides to name their child Ethera, a play on 'ethereal', a symbol of their hope that she would remain intangible to forces that would do her harm.
Before the realm was reborn
In order to maintain appearances, X'mhati wouldn't stay with Pahja and Ethera for long stretches of time, no matter how much it pained him to do so. He would typically only return on official Duelist business. Over the next four years the couple built up the habit of writing to each other anonymously whenever they would be forced to go long stretches without seeing each other. Pahja often shared coded messages on Ethera's upbringing, and X'mhati shared updates on the status of the war. X'mhati would occasionally visit on official business and spend some amount of time with Ethera, but as the war in Ala Mhigo grew bloodier by the day, he found himself needed there more and more. The final letter Pahja received was in 1557. X'mhati mentioned that the war was nearing its end, that defectors within the palace would throw wide the gates of Ala Mhigo for the revolutionaries, and that Theodoric would finally be put to the sword. It was his hope that once the war is over he could finally return to Pahja's side and the three of them could finally live together peacefully.Unfortunately tragedy struck, for soon after this letter was sent Lambard betrayed the Crimson Duelists, slaying all but X'rhun. When he returned to their base of operations, X'rhun found X'mhati among the corpses, clutching a letter in his hand—a letter of proposal with a ring tucked inside the creases. He had speculated that X'mhati might have had a secret lover, but as their letters always remained anonymous and in coded language, he had no way of tracking his lover down. He decided to keep the letter and ring on his person, as a memento of his childhood brother, and in the hopes that one day he might deliver X'mhati's final message to his loved ones.
While the operation to overthrow the Mad King succeeded, Garlean forces were waiting in the wings, ready to fill the void left behind after Theodoric was slain. In the years following, Garlean forces pushed even further inland, quickly breaching the border into the Twelveswood. They hunted down any defectors from Gyr Abania. With the inadvertent aide of the Elementals, and Primal summons, Garlean forces were compromised and were forced into a retreat.Ethera meanwhile had turned 5 and began learning how to use a bow by her mother. As her personal teacher, Ethera took after her mother and continued grew into an incredibly skilled archer. Alongside here were other children of the village learning to fend for themselves. The children in the village were introduced to all kinds of practices from archery, to lancing, botany, alchemy, conjury, and so forth. Once it was determined where the child's interests lay, that teacher would more permanently take on that child as an apprentice. The Garleans meanwhile toiled away at some kind of project at the border, until finally in 1563, when Ethera was only 10 years old, the Garleans had completed what was a huge wall of iron in an attempt to protect their forces from Primals. With its construction, any hope Pahja had of seeing X'mhati again were dashed.
As Ethera grew, she continued to learn more from the matriarchs and the other children. Her best friend since childhood was a girl around her age named Masha Kaatapoh, the daughter of another of their village's matriarchs. Masha took after her mother as well and followed the path of a botanist. The two often read books together and chatted about their favorite stories. Masha had an affinity for tales of true love and romance novels where women are swept off their feet. Ethera liked the love stories well enough as well, but she truly loved stories of daring heroes who selflessly protected others, and non-fiction stories about history. Any added romance was a welcome bonus.
As the pair grew older, Masha began actively seeking a love of her own, often falling in and out of love very quickly when a person didn't meet her expectations. Ethera meanwhile was looking for something deeper, forming a bond with someone over time. Something like what she has with Masha, who's been her dearest friend since childhood. Apprehensive of making her feelings known, she continued her training and studies in silence, and remained on the receiving end of Masha's many grievances with her partners. After making the suggestion that Masha take things slow and learn more about the people she chooses to court, Masha realizes that Ethera has always been by her side, and concludes that perhaps the love she has been seeking has been right in front of her the whole time. The two came together and recognized their love for each other.
Several months later, the village receives word that conflict with the Garleans has reached a critical stage, with the Battle of Cartaneau raging hundreds of miles away, and the red moon looming in the sky. As a precaution to Dalamud closing in on the star, the village sought shelter beneath the boughs of the Everschade, praying that the Elementals would grant them succor and protection. After hearing a loud crash and echoing roar, Ethera was drawn out from under the branches by her insatiable curiosity to get a better view, much to her mother's horror. The view of the sky above triggered something within Ethera, and she begins to hear a disembodied voice speak to her as her body collapses onto the ground. The moment passes quickly and she finds herself back beneath the tree in her mother's arms. The horror lasted several minutes until the sky and the air suddenly became still and stale.
The land had been struck once again by an Umbral Calamity. In the days following, the citizens across Eorzea found themselves picking up the remnants of their broken land. While much of the destruction managed to miss their village, there were many who were not so lucky. A large chunk of the Red Moon Dalamud had shattered the Northern Shroud like glass. On top of that, structures suddenly began appearing all over the Twelveswood that hadn't been there before. The damage to the land had caused significant harm to the Elementals whose power began to wane, causing glamours hiding ancient Amdapoor ruins to fade. While Ethera wanted nothing more than to delve deep within the ruins, there were more dire circumstances that she felt an obligation towards.Day in and day out Ethera traveled the Twelveswood to aide those affected by the Calamity as best she could, often to the detriment of her own wellness. Neglecting to take proper rests and eat proper meals, she sought only to assist those who needed help. She had never dealt with anything so dire before, she struggled to find what power she could to help. During one instance, she collapsed for a moment, searing pain piercing through her skull, and she suddenly begins seeing a moment through another person's eyes. A moment from the past. After the pain subsides she finds herself surrounded by those whom she was trying to help. Convinced she was fatigued from overwork, her companions insisted she rest. Her reunion with Masha during her forced reprieve wasn't as jubilant as one would hope however. Masha had grown frustrated; by her fear, by her feelings of inadequacy to do anything to help, that their lives had all been irreparably changed, and that Ethera had spent very little time with her since. She was forced to wrestle with these feelings alone while everyone was too busy trying to repair the damages to help her. The two fought, Ethera arguing on the side of putting her own wants and feelings aside to help those in need, and Masha arguing that her feelings should matter more being Ethera's girlfriend. Tired and frustrated, the two spent time apart to cool their heads. The calamity had been hard on everyone, no one expects something like this to happen. What Masha was feeling was justifiable, but Ethera just couldn't bring herself to abandon those in need. After a few days of rest, Ethera continued her efforts. Masha's words rung in Ethera's head as she worked, and guilt began to churn within her stomach. Ethera made a point to retire early to spend proper time with Masha. The dark haired Keeper was still cold and distant however, refusing to acknowledge Ethera's presence much. In that moment Ethera began having another piercing headache. There in the bed they shared, she saw Masha in the arms of a man, the two of them seeking comfort in one another with him between her legs. Ethera screamed the moment the vision ended, tears of rage swelling her cheeks. She had never felt such anger towards Masha before, who in turn bit back that Ethera works herself to the bone for the comfort of total strangers but has neglected to help or comfort the person who's supposed to be most important to her. She accused Ethera of being cruel and selfish, leaving Masha waiting. Venom struck when she asked if Ethera would abandon her one day to become an adventurer and never return. She made her decision and refused to be left alone, bereft of companionship.Their relationship was over, destroyed by the tumultuous emotions following the Calamity. Ethera cried until she had no more tears left to cry. Her heart was broken, and all she felt she could do was curse whatever was causing these visions. In the days that followed, Ethera continued working to aide those she could, working longer and longer to keep her mind off of it. Off of her. However, she continued having visions every so often. People pickpocketing or looting out of desperation. Men assaulting women folk. Lying, cheating, swindling, all done when no one had been looking. She tried to right the wrongs she had borne clairvoyant witness to, but it only caused further friction in the lives of those she was trying to help. People began believing she was snooping everywhere, or rummaging through people's belongings looking for cause to accuse them. Many believed her visions to be blasphemous and decried her to be a manipulator. Soon none wanted her aide, and her mother relieved her of her position.Five years had past since the Calamity happened, and life had only seemed to have gotten worse for Ethera ever since. Her mother, however, had other plans. After relieving Ethera of her humanitarian position, the two met within the walls of their home. Ethera pleaded with her mother to let her continue to help, but Pahja refused. Instead, ever her daughter's biggest supporter, she took her daughter in her arms and told her how proud she was of her, but that the people, the land, the very star, they were all wounded. No one's life had gotten better since the Calamity occurred. But Pahja believed deeply in her daughter's strength and determination, seeing much of her late father in her, and decided to bequeath a gift to Ethera. A wish Pahja wanted to see granted: For Ethera to leave the village and see the world. The problems in the worlds are too vast to count, and it wouldn't benefit Ethera to remain cooped up in this provincial village. Ethera reluctantly accepted her terms, terrified, but conscious that none around them trusted her at the moment. As a seal of her request, and an embodiment of Ethera's promise, Pahja marks Ethera with twin stars across her left cheek."My beloved little star. You are capable of so much more. You will become a lodestar to those whose lives you will touch, leading them to a brighter tomorrow. But you cannot achieve that here. Tomorrow morning, you must make for Gridania and don't look back. Find your own way in the world...as I once did. I love you, my beloved daughter."They both struggled to find rest that night, Ethera fighting the feeling that her mother was simply exiling her, and Pahja worried about her daughter's safety and just how much she's going to miss her. So the two chose to spend Ethera's last night together, one last time. The next morning Ethera packed a travel bag, and left her childhood home, hitching a ride with a merchant who has stayed in their village on his way to Gridania.

The Scions of the Seventh Dawn
Minfilia
The first person Ethera met who also had the Echo. Minfilia helped her to better understand the ability she had been given better, and see it less of a curse, and more of a blessing, proving Pahja right.Ethera didn't allow herself to grow very close to Minfilia during their time together, still wounded emotionally from her break-up, but when she looks back on it, Ethera can't help but feel grateful for guiding her down a better path.
Y'shtola Rhul
Given Y'shtola's straightforward nature and willingness to give Ethera her space, the two hit it off very well. Ethera always knew where she stood with Y'shtola and that was comforting early on in her journey. As she began to come out of her shell, so too did their relationship begin to flourish more as Y'shtola got to learn more about her, to the point they came to regard each other as sisters. Ethera gets a lot of fulfillment helping Y'shtola with her research, and Y'shtola in kind appreciates Ethera's knack for helping and unique perspective and insight.
Thancred Waters
Thancred and Ethera did not get along at first. Ethera already wasn't a fan of receiving unwanted attention, but having just had a lifelong friendship turned romantic ruined by betrayal, she had very little patience for Thancred's womanizing ways and incessant flirting. There was one evening in particular where the Scions were taking it easy that Thancred got particularly drunk and began to lash out, not understanding why Ethera was being so cold towards him, and in a moment of frustration she took all her pent up rage out on him and slapped him across the face. Some of her nails inadvertently scratched him, and he still has a scar on his ear to this day. After the event of ARR and having lost Minfilia, Thancred had cooled down a lot, and began treating with Ethera at more of an arm's length as to not betray her trust again. He has since apologized for his earlier behavior and has even thanked her for knocking some sense into him.The two have an amicable relationship now and see each other as trusted comrades on the battlefield. Thancred can always trust Ethera to be direct with him and give him a kick on the ass when he needs it.

G'raha Tia
The most recent member of the Scions, G'raha first met Ethera as part of the expebition party researching the Crystal Tower including the Sons of Saint Coinach and the Ironworks workers. The two had a slightly awkward relationship at first but they quickly found common ground and began to form a close friendship over the course of the expedition. G'raha helped Ethera overcome her resistance to get close to others, and she likewise taught him to rely on others for help. With Ethera's help he was able to discover the truth behind the crimson eyes he inherited from the ancient Allagans, and she became his inspiration and a true hero to him in so doing. When he was tasked with transporting Ethera to the First to save it from destruction, be accepted without hesitation, but kept his identity secret in an attempt to soften the blow when he inevitably sacrificed himself for her. Despite his efforts, Ethera knew who he was from the beginning, having not forgotten about him. However she silently agreed to play along until she better understood the situation.Unbeknownst to G'raha, he had inadvertently become infatuated with Ethera during his time waiting for her, and when reunited, he fell deeply in love after seeing how she had changed in his absence. Whether from nativity, or ignorance to the feeling of love, or perhaps even out of deep rooted self-doubt, he never acknowledged these feelings as anything other than admiration.Ethera on the other hand immediately recognized his feelings, and fell in love in return. When they returned to the first, Ethera personally helped see to his recovery when his two selves were merged. Events unfortunately moved too quickly for Ethera to muster up the courage to tell G'raha how she felt, so she kept them to herself while they prevented the Final Days.It wasn't until after the final days had been prevented, and Ethera received closure that she confessed her feelings to G'raha in the Churning Mista during their trip to Ishgard and by extension Dravania. G'raha was hesitant at first but was finding it harder to deny his feelings as time had gone on, and ultimately accepted.Their relationship is still going strong. The two are now engaged after Ethera proposed after the events in Tural.
